How to add Google analytics to Shopify

Introduction

Shopify is a popular ecommerce platform that allows businesses to create online stores. One of the great things about Shopify is that it integrates with Google Analytics, making it easy to track your store's performance. In this article, we'll show you how to add Google Analytics to your Shopify store.

How to verify if you have Google Analytics enable for your Shopify store?

For Shopify stores, adding Google analytics multiple times to your store will cause a bad impact on the Google analytics tracking function for your store, i.e., it will not provide you with accurate results related to your traffic, so be sure to add Google analytics only once to your store. To verify, follow these steps:

1. Click Settings > Apps and sales channels in your Shopify admin.

2. Click Online store on the Apps and sales channels page.

3. Click Open sales channel.

4. Then select Preferences.

5. Make sure the box in the Google Analytics section is empty other than the text Paste your code from Google here. If you notice this, move on to the following action. If, however, you see a code starting with UA-, you already have Google Analytics set up.

6. Press Themes.

7. Select Edit code under Actions.

8. Click / theme.liquid in the Layout section.

In your theme.liquid file, search for any of the following Google Analytics tracking tags in the theme.liquid file: ga.js, dc.js, gtag.js, or analytics.js.

If you don't see a tracking code in the Google Analytics section of your Preferences page, and you don't have a Google Analytics tracking tag in your theme.liquid file, then Google Analytics isn't enabled on your store.

Steps for adding Google analytics to your Shopify store:

Step 1: You have to create a Google account in order to use it for connecting to Google Analytics, or if you already have one, you can use it instead.

Step 2: Enable Google analytics

You must create a Universal Analytics property in Google and add it to your Shopify store in order to enable Google Analytics. To do it, here are the steps:

1. Activate Google Analytics in a web browser and log in.

2. Select Admin.

3. Select the appropriate account from the Account column.

4. Click Create Property in the Property column.

5. Give the property a name.

6. A Universal Analytics property is the only option that should be chosen. Google automatically creates attributes for Google Analytics 4 that are incompatible with Shopify. So make sure to create a Universal Analytics property.

7. Choose Next.

8. Choose the proper options.

9. Press Create.

10. By selecting the Universal Analytics property and clicking Ctrl+C on a computer or Command+C on a Mac, you can quickly copy it to your clipboard.

11. Start by opening your Shopify admin in a new browser tab.

12. Access Preferences under Online Store.

13. Paste your Universal Analytics property into the Google Analytics account field in the Google Analytics section.

Note:

Until you remove password security from your online store, Google Analytics won't be able to track visits.
